Powers of Attorney and Certifications

The Consular Section provides services related to letters of authorization, powers of attorney, certifications, and certain consular documents intended to have legal effect in Honduras or before competent authorities. Before scheduling an appointment, the Embassy may require a preliminary review of the draft document or supporting documentation.

Who May Apply?

This service is available to Honduran citizens and individuals with a legitimate interest who need to authorize a representative, certify documents, or carry out certain notarial acts before the Embassy.

A. Letter of Authorization (Carta Poder)

What Is It?

A Letter of Authorization (Carta Poder) is a limited authorization granted for a specific and clearly defined procedure, such as collecting documents or completing a particular administrative process.

Requirements

  • Honduran National Identity Card (DNI) or passport of the grantor.

  • Copy of the representative’s identification document.

  • Clear description of the specific procedure being authorized.

  • In certain cases, proof of bar association membership if the representative is an attorney.

Procedure

  1. The Embassy reviews the case and issues the corresponding invoice.

  2. An appointment is scheduled.

  3. The applicant signs the document before the consular authority.

  4. The document is signed, sealed, and delivered to the applicant.

  5. Where applicable, the document must be authenticated in Honduras before the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (SRECI) for its final use.

B. General or Special Power of Attorney

General Information

For General Powers of Attorney and Special Powers of Attorney, the document must be drafted by a Honduran attorney and submitted to the Embassy in advance. The Embassy assumes no responsibility for errors or omissions in the legal content of the draft.

Requirements

  • Final draft of the power of attorney prepared by a Honduran attorney.

  • Honduran National Identity Card (DNI) or passport of the grantor.

  • Identification document of the appointed representative.

  • Proof of bar association membership if the representative is an attorney.

Procedure

  1. The applicant submits the draft document for operational review.

  2. The Embassy determines the type of power of attorney and issues the corresponding invoice.

  3. An appointment is scheduled for signature.

  4. The signed original remains on file at the Embassy, and the applicant receives the corresponding certified copy or testimony.

C. Certifications

Common Services

  • Driver’s License Certification.

  • Certification of Translations.

  • Documentary or Civil Status Certifications, depending on the circumstances of the case.

Driver’s License Certification

Honduras and the Republic of Korea maintain a reciprocal driver's license validation arrangement. The Embassy may issue the corresponding certification, including a Korean-language translation, provided that the Honduran driver's license is valid and unexpired. Expired licenses are not eligible for certification.

Requirements for Driver’s License Certification

  • Honduran National Identity Card (DNI) or passport of the holder.

  • Original valid driver's license.

Procedure

  1. The applicant sends copies of the required documents by email.

  2. The Embassy issues an invoice for USD 50.00.

  3. The applicant completes the payment and an appointment is scheduled.

  4. During the appointment, the Embassy certifies the license and provides the Korean-language translation.

  5. The applicant then submits the certification to the relevant Korean driver's licensing authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Embassy draft General or Special Powers of Attorney? No. The draft must be prepared by a Honduran attorney.

What is the difference between a Letter of Authorization and a Special Power of Attorney? A Letter of Authorization is limited to a specific procedure, while a General or Special Power of Attorney grants broader legal authority and effects.

Can an expired driver's license be certified? No. Only valid and unexpired licenses may be certified.

Can I bring my own translation? In certain cases, yes. However, the Embassy must verify or certify the translation before it can be used before Honduran authorities.
